Durham Constabulary, together with
Durham FA hosted its fourth annual
Girls’ Football tournament in July
2004. In its first year 60 girls took
part in the event which is held at
Aykley Heads. This year over 400
girls between the ages of 8 and 16
took part, with teams coming from all
over the north east.
This very popular event is organised by officers
from the force’s Operations Division, Roads
Policing Unit, Durham FA and Durham
Association of Clubs for Young People. Without
the backing of DAAC, Barclays Bank and
Bikewise, the girls would not have been able to
enjoy two days of quality football.
Walkers Snack Foods donate snacks for the
event and each participant leaves with a goodie
bag and a T-shirt to remind them of the
week-end.
Football is one of the country’s fastest growing
sports for girls and this event is the largest
only tournament in the north east. Next year
organisers are hoping to attract more teams,
can only do so with the backing of organisations
such as Durham Agency Against Crime. |
