Now entering its fourteenth year,
the “Jet and Ben” initiative is the
Agency’s flagship project.
Jet and
Ben, continue to spread the ‘Say No
To Strangers’ message throughout
all primary and special schools in
County Durham.
Jet and Ben, with handler P.C. Chris Watkins,
visited primary, nursery and special schools
during the last year where Chris (with help from
the dynamic duo) performed his own 'Jet and
Ben' song, finally leaving each child with a
colouring book depicting the safety message
and a copy of the professionally produced
compact disc for the school.
The group have also made appearances at
several events including fetes and open days
and also to older people’s groups where Chris
spoke to them about the dangers of
bogus callers.

Jet & Ben
The launch of the interactive CDRom
for use with Key Stage One
pupils took place at Eden
Community Primary School in
Peterlee in July 2004.
Developed in collaboration with police, health
and education organisations and Durham
Agency Against Crime, the CD-Rom
addresses critical issues for children,
including safety in the home, drugs and
alcohol and other community issues.
Activities on the CD ROM include quizzes and
animations of the dogs.
Mr David Cliff who heads the Drug and
Alcohol Action Team said “This is a solid
piece of partnership work, aimed at
developing a valuable resource for schools
supporting younger children.”
Jet and Ben could not continue without the
excellent support received from numerous
partners, including County Durham Drug and
Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), Darlington
DAAT, Newsquest North East and the
continuing commitment of Durham
Constabulary.

Message from P.C. Ingrid
Hudson - Jet & Ben’s new
handler
“Since starting in my new role in April 2004, the
dogs and I have been kept busy visiting primary
schools across County Durham and Darlington
delivering the ‘Say No To Strangers’ message.
This approach was successfully used when
intelligence indicated a particular residential
area could be potentially at risk. A focused
programme of eight Jet and Ben visits were
made to schools in the area. Other police
action successfully dealt with the problem and
a person is now serving a custodial sentence.
During the summer holidays we attended
various events throughout the county including
a Fun Day at Durham High School for Girls,
which was so successful that it will be held
every two years. At the National SureStart
Playday in Brandon, children ranging from
toddlers to 10 years of age were introduced to
Jet & Ben and a great day was had by all.
In September, the department launched a
Christmas Card competition for all year 6 pupils
and already there has been a huge amount of
interest, with the central theme of the cards
being ‘Jet & Ben’. The dogs will be present for
the prize giving and the successful artist will win
a bike and £100 in art materials for the school.
We are starting to get a full diary for the coming
year, so we anticipate that Jet & Ben will be just
as popular as ever!”
