A secondee from Durham
Constabulary, P.C. Gill Richardson,
organised this year’s ‘Look at Life’ course.
These courses are run in conjunction with the
Army and aim to give young people aged
between 15 & 18 years the opportunity to
experience living within the disciplined
community of the services for a five day period.
Within a safe environment, the carefully chosen
activities allow for demonstration and further
development of positive attitudes, self reliance,
teamwork and promotion of appropriate
behaviour. Emphasis is placed upon the
development of self-confidence and social
conscience. It is hoped that the experience will
introduce new levels of understanding
themselves, those around them and the society
in which they live.
Activities include: Health and Hygiene, Self
Defence, Command Tasks, Environmental Issues,
Physical Training, Assault Course, Leadership
and Appointed Tasks - Living in the Field.
44 young people attended the course with the
Parachute Regiment in Colchester and were
accompanied by three Police Officers from
Durham Constabulary. As a result of attending
this course, four young people have actively
sought careers within the Armed Services and
one has been accepted into the Military College
in Harrogate.
Future changes
The ‘Look at Life’ courses will now be
administered and financed by the Army Regional
Recruiting Unit for our area which is based at
Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire. Strong
links have been forged between DAAC and Major
Dave Attwood who heads the team, enabling us
to refer other organisations to them when
appropriate.
Beat Officers have had presentations from the
Army to enable them to take information into their
divisions and make these excellent opportunities
available to the wider youth community. |
