Abandoned vehicles blight
neighbourhoods, attract further
abandoned rubbish, are often used as "communal" vehicles by criminals and often result in them being set on fire, with resultant strains on police
and fire and rescue services and
danger to the neighbourhood.
Following on from the successful scheme in the
Easington District Council area, entitled
Easington's Response to Arson (ERA), DAAC
worked with County Durham and Darlington Fire
and Rescue Service to roll out the programme
around the DAAC catchment area. Kick start
funding was provided for publicity and
promotional materials by Government Office
North East, with additional funding from the
Arson Control Forum.
All local authorities in the area now have a rapid
response policy and procedures to deal promptly
with abandoned vehicles.

Arson Control Forum
Bob Glass attends a working group of the Arson
Control Forum on behalf of both Durham
Constabulary and DAAC. With the close links
between DAAC and County Durham and
Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, it is hoped
to implement further joint programmes of work in
2004/5 to address how to prevent the highly
dangerous crime of arson.
In May 2004, Bob attended a conference at
Westminster where many items of good practice
were raised.
