North East Retail Crime Partnership

In 2001 retail crime cost traders in England and Wales £2.4 billion!

The North East Retail Crime Partnership (NERCP) is administered by our partners at Northumbria Coalition Against Crime. As board level partners in the anti crime scheme, we liaise with 56 member stores in the Durham Constabulary area who are members of NERCP.

In June 2003, a Retail Civil Recovery Scheme was launched at the Cornmill Shopping Centre, Darlington where retailers were informed of the civil law process of reclaiming costs and losses directly from shop thieves.

This is an excellent deterrent to offenders and increases the cost of crime to the thief. Retail Civil Recovery has since been marketed throughout the region, with assistance from solicitors Ward Hadaway.

In June 2004, the first AGM of the North East Retail Crime Partnership took place at the Gala Theatre in Durham where a full report of the work of the partnership and its future developments was given. The forum reported that shop theft had reduced by an average of 20% over the NERCP area. The event was supported by Government Office for the North East and presentations were given by successful partnerships from other parts of the country.

If you are interested in becoming a member of NERCP or require further information on the scheme, please contact any of the DAAC Executive Team or contact Northumbria Coalition Against Crime (01661 868424).
