Since 1993, the hugely successful ‘Square
Mile’ project has been run as a partnership
between DAAC and the sponsors
Northumbrian Water, with support from
Transco, Northumbria Coalition Against
Crime and local police forces.
During the course of the competition, over 5,000
young people from Durham, Northumbria and
Cleveland have been involved in environmental,
crime prevention or social awareness
programmes improving community life around
their school, youth club or home.
The competition was open to teams of young
people aged 11 to 17 with significant prizes
available to the winners. There were many
impressive projects submitted over the years and
teams often excelled themselves in the
improvements they achieved, showing creativity,
imagination, and tenacity when overcoming
problems. For many, this was a new experience
when they discovered the pleasure of helping
their communities.
New project - new name ‘Making Waves’ is the new name for the
competition which will still be funded by
Northumbrian Water. It has been further
developed and will be supported by numerous
partners including Durham Agency Against
Crime. It will be managed by The Young Peoples
Trust for the Environment.
The competition will be open to two age groups – 9 to 12 years and 12 to 16 years. There will be
a minimum of 3 to a group and a maximum of a
class sized group of 30. Entries can be from
either of two categories – Environmental or
Community.
The competition will run over a school year and
teams will be able to compete for a wide variety
of prizes, including an environmental holiday in
Britain for the overall winner, and Get Hooked on
Fishing and Look at Life and sports coaching
holidays being given for the most innovative, best
improved, biggest impact, best environmental
and best citizenship projects.
This new project will be launched in
September 2004. |
