For those looking for a glimpse into history, the area abounds in monasteries, castles and abbeys; Bylands Abbey, Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle, Barnard Castle and Bolton Castle with its association with Mary Queen of Scots, to name but a few. Thirsk, being only five miles from the Al, is the obvious place for businessmen to stay when visiting the industrial center of Teesside.

Restaurant

We have an attractive restaurant seating 70, which is open to residents and non-residents every evening, and we offer a varied menu of traditional and continental dishes. There are two bars - a lounge bar and a cocktail bar/residents' lounge. Bar snacks are served every lunchtime and evening, and a children's menu is available. Our function room with dance area caters for wedding receptions, meetings, annual dinners and similar occasions.

For the curious it is worth mentioning that a "Tun" is a barrel containing 216 gallons of wine.

For a walking or touring holiday in Yorkshire the bustling but un-spoilt Market Town of Thirsk, with its attractive cobbled Market Place in which the Hotel stands, is a natural center. It has excellent road communications, a main line railway station, and is within easy reach of all the main centers of attraction, being only half an hour by car from York, the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Hambleton Hills. Thirsk is also on the A170, the main route to the East Coast with its many and varied resorts and scenery.

Lounge Bar

The Three Tuns still provides visitors with all the essentials of a family run hotel -comfortable rooms, good food, real ale and a warm welcome. We have 12 centrally heated bedrooms, all of which have en-suite bath or shower and W.C. All rooms have direct dial telephone, colour TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Three of the bedrooms can be used as family rooms.

Twin Room

"We hope our facilities are of interest and look forward to hearing from you."

Hanging Baskets

Thirsk itself is famous for its horseracing and even better known for its close association with James Herriot, the vet whose practice is just off the market square. Market days are Monday and Saturday and the livestock auction is on Thursday. Thirsk Museum in Kirkgate has an interesting collection of memorabilia and is well worth a visit. St. Mary's Church, a somber building with its buttressed tower and ornate parapet, is probably the best example of Perpendicular Architecture in Yorkshire. It was started in 1430 and completed during the 16th Century. The remains of the ancient Market Cross were removed to the gardens of Thirsk Hall, Kirkgate in about 1850 and are still to be found there today.

Four Poster Room

William Wordsworth spent his honeymoon at the Three Tuns in 1802.

The Three Tuns is a Grade II Listed Building, with many interesting architectural features. The restaurant, situated on the first floor, has an unusual bay window overlooking the courtyard. Another outstanding feature of the hotel is the Queen Anne staircase, which dominates the foyer.
