Residence Permit
Spanish regulations state that any person who resides in Spain for more than six months should have an official residence permit. To apply for a permit at the local police station you will need:

> Proof of Income
> Proof of medical insurance
> Form E121
> Passport and a photocopy
> Four passport sized photographs.

You will be issued with an NIE number, which is also required for non-residents if they have any connection with the Spanish tax system, for example, owning a property or a car or even drawing interest from the bank.

It is illegal to work in Spain without a work permit or an EU registration card.

Residents Identity Card
If you become a resident, Spain operates an identity card system (NIE) and you will need to apply for one at an Oficina de extranjeros (foreigners office) or a police comisaria with a foreign department. Anyone wishing to get a residence card will need:

> A current passport and one complete photocopy of it
> Proof of Income
> Proof of medical insurance or a form E121 if the applicant is retired
> If one spouse is dependant, a marriage certificate and one photocopy
> A few pounds worth of Bonds, which can be bought at a Tobacconist
> Three passport size photographs
